The App
In order to improve the accessibility of technology for grass roots athletics, there was a need for a simple to use application agnostic of any set provider and designed with accessibility principles in mind. PolyField is designed and implemented by members of Kingston Athletic Club and Polytechnic Harriers (KACPH) to meet this need. Our ethos is to create a supporting aid for officials, reducing the barriers to technology and improving the athlete, spectator AND officials experience.
A key principle of our app is to demistify the calibration of an Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM). For both throws and horizontal jumps we have created a simple wizard type walk through with every step explained.
Recommended Hardware
The PolyField app is designed to be used with a screen size of 8 Inches.
Due to the operating environment in the United Kingdom, we have found the Oukitel RT3 ruggedised android tablet to be a good fit. It is weather proof, has a long battery life and screen brightness is suitable for outdoor use.
1 - 2 - 3 Throws Calibration
Our 3 step Throws EDM Calibration Wizard guides you through the process, allowing anyone no matter their experience level to be able to calibrate an EDM to World Athletics standards of tolerance.
Set Centre of the circle. Verify Edge of the circle. Measure a Sector Check Mark.
There is clear feedback of the calibrated status allowing you to be confident in your setup. PASS or FAIL with a guide and exact measurements on how to get closer to perfect!
1 - 2 Jumps Calibration
Our 2 step Jumps EDM Calibration Wizard guides you through the process. Measure Left side of board. Measure Right side of board.
Add additional boards for Triple Jump repeating the same 1 – 2 process.
An optional check mark can be measured for each board to provide you assurance of the calibration. The board width is always displayed.
Throws
Measure throws with an EDM, plotting onto our heat maps and generating statistical analysis of the event. All throws events including seated supported.
Horizontal Jumps
Long and Triple Jump can be measured with or without an EDM. Electronic wind gauges can capture the wind and record measurements, freeing up an official.
Vertical Jumps
No frills, use our interface to give an accessible friendly input for your favourite Competition Management Providers. Reduce the requirement for officials to learn different systems and interfaces.
Athlete Progression 'The Cut'
Throws and Jumps can manage progression to rounds 4, 5 and 6. The official is always in control and can override progression. Athletes can have individual cuts applied dependant on age group, allowing combined championships to take place within the same competition.
Stand Alone Mode
Measuring per athlete is only possible in combination with the Server. Without this it is still possible to use PolyField as an improved interface for your EDM.
You still benefit from the 1 – 2 – 3 Calibration Wizard and a clear display of the measured distance. We have even implemented a local Heat Map and some statistics too!
